What if instead of waiting until a person is in crisis to build a Safety Plan, children, youth and adults were given the tools to identify and take action when warning signs of mental, emotional and spiritual health decline begin to appear? Often times, we’re taught to suffer silently with own trauma, depression, fears and anxieties. We believe that no one will understand our stories or that perhaps our traumas aren’t as important as others. We might fear that our expression of mental, emotional or spiritual pain is somehow a weakness, rather than a normal part of being human. But far too often, these beliefs lead to physical ailments, challenges in our relationships, trouble at work, emotional and spiritual anguish, loneliness, addictions, mental health crisis, and worse.
In this presentation, All People Thriving founder, Ryan Acker, shares his journey overcoming these beliefs, and the role of Safety Planning in saving his life. Using the power of storytelling, Ryan explores what happens when we don’t have Safety Planning as a normal part of our culture. Throughout this presentation, he shares a wide range of lifelines, coping strategies, key challenges to be aware of, and tips for creating a DIY Safety Plans for ourselves and our loved ones. Participants can expect to hear a first-hand account from someone who has overcome decades of struggling with suicide and depression and walk away with tools and guidance for creating their own Safety Plan.
